OUTRAGE

Tea Party legislators are trying to punish and humiliate people who are out of work-they're even threatening to take away unemployment insurance from some people completely.

If you think Congress should be focusing on jobs instead of punishing and even humiliating people who are out of work through no fault of their own, take action now.

Facebook   Twitter

Unemployment insurance as we know it is on the chopping block.

Tea Party Republicans are leading the charge to reduce coverage and throw up barriers to benefits like GED requirements. And they're even threatening to force people who are jobless-through no fault of their own-to endure humiliating drug tests just to get survival aid.

Tell Congress: It's time to pass a clean, yearlong extension of unemployment aid now.

It's great news that the economy added jobs last month. But for working America, the economy still is in the gutter. We're climbing out of a deep, deep hole. Unemployment remains sky high, and it's projected to stay there through the next year and beyond.

But Tea Party politicians are holding America's jobless hostage to their extremist agenda.

Urge Congress to act now to extend unemployment benefits for a full year-with no strings attached, no barriers to benefits and no brutal humiliation.

We have to force Congress to renew unemployment insurance benefits again-and this time, the stakes are higher than ever before. Tea Party politicians are pushing plans to:

  • Slash federal unemployment funding by more than half in the states with the highest unemployment.

  • Let states whose governments have been taken over by the Tea Party divert premium money away from unemployment insurance as we know it-and use it to experiment with right-wing social engineering programs (like "workfare," where people are forced to work for free to get unemployment benefits.)

  • Mandate drug-testing requirements. Politicians are ready to humiliate people who are out of work-by making them urinate in a cup to get benefits they paid for and are entitled to.

  • Make jobless workers pay for their re-employment services. People who are out of work through no fault of their own and have paid into the system aren't asking for a handout-but a helping hand. Now, the radical lawmakers want to make them pay for the privilege.

  • Deny benefits to people who never got their high school diploma-they'd have unemployment insurance taken out of their paycheck, but would get nothing should they lose their job. Shame!

  • Cut federal employee pensions-or freeze wages for yet another year. Federal workers already have done more than their fair share to balance the budget-while the richest 1% of Americans have been asked to do absolutely nothing.

Outraged? You aren't alone. Demand Congress extend unemployment insurance for a full year-with no barriers, no strings attached and no brutal humiliation.

Let's make this happen.

Statement by AFL-CIO President Richard L. Trumka On President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address
January 24, 2012

Leaders are judged not just by what they say but to whom they listen. President Obama's speech tonight shows that he has listened to the single mom working two jobs to get by, to the out-of-work construction worker, to the retired factory worker, to the student serving coffee to help pay for college.

By laying out a vision of an America that can create jobs and prosperity for all instead of wealth for the few, the President voiced the aspirations and concerns of those who are too often ignored.

And tonight he made clear that the era of the 1% getting rich by looting the economy, rather than creating jobs, is over-what a contrast to the vision presented by presidential candidates squabbling over how much further to cut the taxes of the 1%.

Recognizing the need for accountability the President powerfully insisted on a more humble Wall Street subject to a thorough investigation of the misconduct in the mortgage markets that wrecked our economy by the full range of federal and state civil and criminal authorities. We applaud the creation of a new mortgage crisis unit to be co-chaired by New York's Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman.

President Obama spoke to the confidence of working people that if we are determined and committed, we can revitalize "Made in the USA." That commitment to American manufacturing, made possible in part by enhanced enforcement of trade laws being violated by too many of our trade partners. Trade on a fair playing field is welcome news to the too many productive, hard working Americans sitting idle unnecessarily.

The President also gave hope to our nation's young people with his words of support for DREAM students, immigrants brought to this country by their parents and committed to the quintessentially American vision of hard work at school or in military service.

Now it's time for Congress to stop standing in the way of rebuilding our country and act.  For too long, Congress has stood in the way of economic recovery-now, we need Congress to act swiftly and on the massive scale our crisis of joblessness demands.

The clarity of the contrast between the record and rhetoric of President Obama and Indiana's Governor Mitch Daniels, who is giving the GOP response tonight, represents all too well the sad decline of the national Republican party. Daniels flip-flop into supporting "right to work for less" is a prime example of a party increasingly fixated with accommodating the voices of CEOs instead of every day Americans.

Some 285 Cablevision employees in Brooklyn are voting next week on whether to join CWA, despite efforts by a corporate union-buster to stop them from forming a union.

Over the past year, GOP-controlled state houses have been passing Voter ID laws, making it harder for many people, including America's seniors, to vote. Alliance for Retired Americans President Barbara Easterling says this is an outrage: "Our generation, like those who came before us, fought and died for the right to vote. We must never let politicians take this away."

Brothers and Sisters,

We did it!  Over one million signatures have been collected to recall Gov. Scott Walker.  Later today, these signatures will be handed in to the Government Accountability Board for validation.  Together, union members and tens of thousands of grassroots volunteers have collected enough signatures to force special recall elections for Gov. Scott Walker, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, Sen. Pam Galloway, Sen. Terry Moulton, Sen. Scott Fitzgerald and Sen. Van Wanggaard.

That's right, all targeted recall campaigns reached or surpassed their signature goals!  This is a historic moment in Wisconsin history.  The people of Wisconsin are taking charge of their democracy and taking back our government from a corporate politician.

Signature Totals

  • Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch - 845,000
  • Sen. Terry Moulton of Chippewa Falls - 21,000+
  • Sen. Pam Galloway of Wausau -21,000+
  • Sen. Van Wanggaard of Racine - 24,000
  • Sen. Scott Fitzgerald - 20,600

The people have spoken loud and clear and we are ready to put an early end to Gov. Walker's reign.  Next, the Government Accountability Board will begin validating signatures.  After the validating process is complete election dates will be determined.   Today is a day for celebration; tomorrow we will continue to educate our friends and neighbors on the disastrous affects of Gov. Walker's agenda.

Last Tuesday night was a reminder of just how critical every vote, every volunteer and every supporter counts. Mitt Romney squeaked by in the Iowa Caucuses by just 8 votes!

No matter who Republicans pick, we know they'll push the same-old Tea Party agenda: dismantling Medicare, launching assault after assault on the middle class and protecting tax breaks for billionaires and Big Oil.

Let me say this as plainly as I can: these Republicans must be defeated in 2012.

Will you commit to 2012?

Whether it's talking to your friends, sharing the latest campaign updates on Facebook and Twitter, knocking on doors, or making a contribution, we need you behind us in this critical election year.

Pledge your support and you'll receive your 2012 Battleground Strategy Memo.

This week is the one-year anniversary of John Boehner being sworn-in as Speaker and the Tea Party takeover of Congress. If we win in November, we can finally put an end to Republicans' obstructionist tactics and radical right-wing agenda. But, it's clear we need you in the game.

We can't look back on Election Night in November and wish we had done more when the campaign was just getting started. When you add your name, we'll provide you with our plan for winning in 2012, which is already underway.

With Iowa done and primary season in full swing, it's clear the race for 2012 is on.

Don't start out on the sidelines. Click here right now and commit to 2012 >>

Onward,

Steve

Rep. Steve Israel
DCCC Chairman

As you may have heard by now, John Boehner and his caucus of Tea Party obstructionists in the House of Representatives finally accepted political reality. Yesterday, they announced they'd join with 89 out of 100 senators from both political parties who'd already voted to renew unemployment aid for two months-with no cuts and no strings attached.

This is an enormous victory.
Thanks to you, 2.8 million jobless Americans will have a brighter holiday season-and a helping hand over the next two months. Not an easy time. Not a handout or a free ride. But a lifeline and a chance that you made possible.

In the fight to extend aid for the jobless, the 99% went on the offense against the 1% politicians. And we won. And if working people keep it up, we'll score more victories and build a better future. Not every time-two steps forward, one step back. But look around. People all across the country are saying our economy and our democracy are out of balance. And they're winning the public debate.

I hope you'll take some well-deserved time this holiday season to rest, reflect and recharge. Because in 2012, huge challenges will keep on coming. And we'll need you ready to start early, act often and work harder than ever.

I wish all the best for you and your family, for our unions and for our nation this holiday season and in the year ahead.

Thank you for all the work you do.

Brothers and Sisters,

WOW!  Union members and recall activists have gathered over 507,533 signatures to reclaim Wisconsin and recall Gov. Walker.  This is a huge accomplish, but we aren't stopping now!  Our new goal is to collect 720,277 signatures before the January deadline.

With your help we can surpass our goal and ensure that Gov. Walker's on attacks Wisconsin workers and families are stopped.

Click here to donate to the recall effort before the end of the year deadline.  If everyone pitches in we will have the grassroots, people power to combat Gov. Walker's big moneyed, corporate backers like the Koch Brothers.

A new report released by the Institute for Wisconsin's Future shows that the ripple affects of Gov. Walker's policies will cost Wisconsin over 18,000 full-time, private sector jobs a year.  This report is a stark reminder of why we must recall Scott Walker.

Click here to donate $10 today.  Need a last minute holiday gift?  Donate in honor of a friend or family member.  Your donation will directly go to restoring democracy and ensuring that we have the resources necessary to recall Scott Walker.  We need jobs, not a Governor who puts corporate special interests above the 99%.

Urgent: If Congress fails to act, 2 million people who can't find work and are relying on emergency unemployment benefits will lose their lifeline in January. And if action isn't taken at all, the total will rise to at least 6 million over the course of 2012.1

But shockingly, it looks like Speaker John Boehner-who has nearly absolute control over what comes up for a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives-may be willing to ignore this dire crisis and cut 6 million of America's workers off at the knees. While he and his fellow obstructionists pursue a polarizing anti-worker agenda, time may run out for America's jobless.

Sign our emergency petition: Tell Congress it's time to put partisanship aside and take urgent action to renew emergency unemployment now.

Congress has never cut back on federally funded unemployment insurance when unemployment was anywhere near this high for this long.

But this time, it looks like it really might happen. Speaker Boehner is using the limited time left in this year's legislative calendar not to extend unemployment, but to hold votes on legislation designed to benefit corporate CEOs and the richest 1% of Americans.

Hurry: Sign our petition by 9 a.m. Wednesday and we'll be sure your name is included in our delivery to Speaker Boehner and key members of Congress Wednesday afternoon.

The legislative package Speaker Boehner's moving this week-his misleadingly named "Jobs Agenda"-would do nothing to create jobs if it ever became law. Instead, it would weaken unions and workers' collective bargaining rights, gut workplace safety and health rules, end environmental and consumer protections and stop health care regulations and financial safeguards designed to prevent another Great Depression.

Ignoring America's massive crisis of joblessness while pushing attacks on workers is the same kind of overreach that Ohio voters rejected earlier this month. Working families rightfully demand bold action to extend unemployment benefits, address our immediate unemployment crisis and create jobs-now.

Sign now: Urge Congress to stand with unemployed workers and the 99%-not corporate CEOs and the 1%.

Time's running out. Speaker Boehner and other obstructionists in Congress need to address this crisis now. He already failed millions of job-hunters by refusing to take up the American Jobs Act or any serious proposal to create jobs. Let's make sure America's long-term job-hunters aren't left without both jobs and a lifeline in 2012.

Thanks for all the work you do.

"Score one for a customer rebellion!" -- that's how Diane Sawyer announced on ABC Nightly News Friday night that big banks are backing off debit card fees after 300,000 people signed Molly Katchpole's Change.org petition against Bank of America's $5 debit card fee.

Not only is Bank of America revising its $5 debit card fee, but big banks like Chase and Wells Fargo are publicly canceling their plans to charge their customers for debit cards.

You must watch this segment from ABC Nightly News about Molly's Change.org petition. It's a truly inspiring story about what's possible when we organize together.

Molly's fight against Bank of America isn't over. While BofA is revising its fee, many customers, including Molly, would still have to pay $5 for a debit card fee even after the bank's revisions. But, as the Wall Street Journal put it, the "big banks blinked."

Here's what else the media is saying about Molly's Change.org petition against big bank fees:

•·        ABC: "Banks Back Down from Fees"

•·        CBS: "Bank of America Backs Down After Consumer Backlash"

•·        Mother Jones: "Banks Surrender on Debit Card Fees"

•·        Daily Mail: "Victory for customers as big banks back down from debit card fees"

•·        Time Magazine: "Banks Back Off Unpopular Debit Card Fees"

•·        NY Daily News: "After outcry, Wells Fargo, Chase, Bank of America back off on debit card fees"

Dan Rather covered Molly's petition too, saying that Change.org has become a "nerve-center for social justice the world over."

But here's what's most exciting: If a 22-year-old from Washington can best the biggest bank in America with a Change.org petition, think about what else is possible.

Watch ABC Nightly News' report on how banks backed down because of Molly Katchpole's petition on Change.org, then share with people you know.

Thanks for being a change-maker,

- Jess and the Change.org team

Dear Friends,

The corporate friendly politicians and law makers continue to bulldoze over American labor and American workers of the middle and lower class. They continue to show they have NO respect for anyone that cannot afford to be one of their RICH neighbor$. Laws and rules are ignored or changed to favor the wealthiest and the heck with the poor, the weak, the less fortunate. It appears we are just in their way. Remember the previous administrations reckless, tough guy and "could care less about you, WORDS"  (in regards to the invasion of Iraq,) YOU ARE EITHER WITH US OR AGAINST US! That slogan seems to be the headline of their agenda. We need to stop falling prey to their "FEAR TACTICS" and "LIES". We The PEOPLE need to ask ourselves and each other, WHO really is AGAINST us and who HONESTLY is for you and I, for Medicare, Medicaid, food and medical programs for everyone in need. Who is more concerned about cutting back or completely cutting out these programs and wants to give the wealthy more and more wealth?  We must remember it is the Big Corporations that have the power to create jobs, to put us Americans back to work, but choose to give CEO's Big Bonuses instead. Remember, we still have the Right to Vote, which just happens to be another area corporate friendly politicians are attacking us on. I believe it is time to seriously think about the best interests of Family(s) and their future, not one issue agendas. I don't believe in abortion or taking away the right to bear arms and those agendas continue to sway voters. Neither of those important concerns have been changed by Democrats or Republicans and my guess is never will be. Thank you taking the time to read this and hopefully see and understand the direction, motivations and intentions of both parties. We need to ask ourselves, which one is self-serving and which one is about family and everyone who has special needs.

Thank you,

Kevin J. Peterson
